The music
Longtime friends and pioneers of ethnomusicology, Kodály and Bartók travelled through the countryside of Eastern Europe to save an endangered musical repertoire that would permeate their own music. The Dances of Galánta are a tender look back at Kodály's youth. Composed just before Bartók's final exile to the United States, the moving and deeply tormented Violin Concerto No. 2 seems to reflect the anguish that was rising in Europe at the time. Our soloist Christian Tetzlaff recently recorded both Bartók Concertos to great critical acclaim. Finally, the craze for his ballet Romeo and Juliet prompted Prokofiev to adapt it into orchestral suites that conductors can arrange as they wish.
