The music

To mark the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death, Daniele Gatti is conducting a cycle of the composer’s symphonies, across two seasons.

The third concert in the Beethoven Cycle brings together Daniele Gatti and the pianist Mao Fujita, rising star of the international scene, for a programme of great poetic beauty.

Deeply connected to the piano, both as a composer and performer, Beethoven reveals a style of composition characterised by great freedom in his Piano Concerto No. 4. From the very first bars, the piano rises alone before entering into a delicate, subtle and captivating dialogue with the orchestra.

Then, with Symphony No. 6, the ‘Pastoral’, Beethoven does not merely evoke nature: through its five movements, he celebrates the serenity, profound joy and sense of wonder that come from communion with the natural world. A work that inspired Hector Berlioz to write these words of admiration: ‘But Beethoven’s poem!… Those long passages so rich in colour!… Those vivid images!… Those scents!… That light!… That eloquent silence!… Those vast horizons!…’
