Beethoven Cycle 1

To mark the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death, Daniele Gatti is conducting a cycle of the composer’s symphonies, across two seasons.

The first concert in Daniele Gatti’s Beethoven Cycle, this programme traces the early key stages of the composer’s development, from his beginnings rooted in Classicism to the emergence of an innovative musical language.

With the Symphony No. 1, Beethoven remains firmly within the tradition of Haydn and Mozart, whilst already offering a glimpse of his daring temperament.

More free-spirited and luminous, the Symphony No. 4 displays a singular inventiveness and elegance. This evolution reaches its peak with the Symphony No. 5, which embodies the struggle against adversity and the triumphant affirmation of human will.
