Beethoven Cycle 2

To mark the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s death, Daniele Gatti is conducting a cycle of the composer’s symphonies, across two seasons.

The second concert in the Beethoven Cycle, highlights a decisive turning point in Beethoven’s compositional evolution.

With Symphony N° 2, still firmly rooted in the Classical tradition, Beethoven reveals a radiant energy and remarkable inventiveness despite the onset of his deafness. It is a work imbued with unexpected optimism, in which one already senses the triumph of human will over fate, a theme that would remain central to the composer’s music.

That expressive power reaches its full stature in Symphony N° 3, 'Eroica'. With its unprecedented scale and dramatic intensity, it redefines the symphonic genre and heralds a new aesthetic in which individual expression and narrative ambition open the way to Romanticism.
