
Born in Copenhagen, Johan Reuter studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the Academy of the Royal Theater, and took masterclasses with Ernst Haefliger, Anthony Rolfe-Johnson and Richard Trimborn. Since 1996, he has been a soloist with the Copenhagen Opera, where he sings a vast repertoire.
In recent seasons he has sung the roles of Orestes (Elektra) at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen and with the Berlin Philharmonic in Baden Baden, Jochanaan (Salome) at the Paris Opéra and Friedrich von Telramund (Lohengrin) at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. He also appeared in the new production of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, playing the role of Hans Sachs at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and was featured in the San Francisco Opera's centenary celebrations, making his first appearance on the West Coast with Die Frau ohne Schatten. Other career highlights and roles include Barak (Die Frau ohne Schatten) in London, New York, Berlin, Zurich and Amsterdam, the title role in Nabucco at Berlin's Deutsche Oper, Jaroslav Prus (Věc Makropulos) at New York's Metropolitan Opera and the Salzburg Festival, and Wotan (Das Rheingold) at Munich's Bayerische Staatsoper and in Budapest.
Johan Reuter created the role of Theseus for the world premiere of Harrison Birthwistle's The Minotaur at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he also appeared in Elektra, Salome, Wozzeck and The Tsar's Bride. He has also appeared in Der fliegende Holländer in Madrid, Berlin and Copenhagen, Le nozze di Figaro at the Theater an der Wien and Deutsche Oper Berlin, Macbeth in Lisbon, From the House of the Dead in Paris and Madrid and Così fan tutte in Hamburg. In concert, Johan Reuter has recently sung Haydn's Die Schöpfung and Die Jahreszeiten, Mahler's Symphony No. 8, his Rückert-lieder and Das klagende Lied, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, Brahm's Vier ernste Gesänge and Ein deutsches Requiem, Mozart's Requiem and Berlioz's Roméo et Juliette. He has also given singing recitals in Copenhagen, Hanover, Frankfurt, Bergen and Madrid.
Johan Reuter has recorded Tristan und Isolde under Janowski, Kunzen's Holger Danske, Nielsen's Maskarade under Ulf Schirmer (Gramophone Award), Schubert's Winterreise in Danish, as well as solo albums featuring arias by the young Giuseppe Verdi and songs by Richard Strauss, Carl Nielsen and Hakon Børresen.
