The music
Three composers, three perspectives across more than a century of music. With Pablo Heras-Casado making his return as conductor of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Patricia Kopatchinskaja on violin, this programme will explore the duality between tradition and modernity, with each score ingeniously reinterpreting the forms of the past.
Inspired by 18th-century music, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella suite sets the tone with wit and elegance. Next, Shostakovich provides a Violin Concerto No. 2 of great introspective intensity. Finally, Brahms, in his Symphony No. 4, reaches a pinnacle of German Romanticism that draws its inspiration from Bach, perceptible in particular in the passacaglia from the finale of the fourth movement.
