The music
To mark his return to the OSR as guest conductor, Jonathan Nott presents the Swiss premiere of Sonnenring, violin concerto by the vaudois composer Richard Dubugnon. Written for Janine Jansen, one of the leading violin virtuosos of her generation, the concerto draws inspiration from the richly imaginative world of the self-taught Swiss artist Adolf Wölfli, where drawings, colours, symbols and a distinctive musical notation combine to create a complex and utopian universe.
In the second half, Mahler’s monumental yet rarely performed Symphony N° 7, a composer particularly close to Jonathan Nott’s heart, unfolds through striking contrasts of light and shadow, drawing us into the mysteries of the night.
A programme in which contemporary creation and the great symphonic repertoire come together in a shared exploration of imagination and emotion.
