The music

As part of the Fête de la musique, the OSR and Jonathan Nott are presenting four very different 20th-century works. Arthur Honegger's Rugby is inspired by a rugby match. It evokes the energy, rapid movements and clashes of the game through the instrumentation. Originally for piano, Claude Debussy's Trois Études have been transformed for orchestra. Here we discover a variety of timbres and moods. Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring recounts an ancient ritual linked to the return of spring. The music uses strong rhythms and distinctive sounds to create a highly expressive atmosphere. Ma Mère l'Oye by Maurice Ravel is a cycle of five children's pieces for orchestra that evoke fairytales. Le Jardin Féerique, one of the pieces in this suite, plunges you into an imaginary world where magic and nature meet.
