The music
Manfred Honeck was struck by the beauty of this opera from Dvořák whilst working as a violinist at the Vienna State Opera, and drew a suite from it with the help of Czech composer Tomáš Ille. Their Rusalka Fantasy quotes the most beautiful themes from the work, including the famous Romance to the Moon entrusted to the solo violin. Paganini's CapriceNo.24 has turned the heads of many composers, but the most famous reference is found in Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, which is adored by audiences and pianists alike. Finally, the famous "fatum" theme pervades the entire 5th Symphony, one of Tchaikovsky's most tormented and celebrated works.
