
A graduate of the Verdi Conservatory in Milan in composition, organ and piano, Paolo Carignani studied conducting with Alceo Galliera. From 1999 to 2008, he was Generalmusikdirektor at the Frankfurt Opernhaus and the Frankfurter Opern- und Museumsorchester. He has conducted in Amsterdam, Antwerp, at the Bregenz and Salzburg Festivals, Brussels, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Munich, Strasbourg, Toronto and Zurich, and is a regular guest at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Barcelona, Madrid, Munich, Paris, Tokyo, Vienna and Zurich, performing a vast repertoire ranging from Mozart to Belcanto, Verdi and Verismo, as well as premieres and first performances of rare operas. In 2018, he made his debut at La Scala with a new production of Cherubini's Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves and at the Bolshoi with Un ballo in maschera, and returns regularly to Copenhagen, Munich, Vienna, Bolshoi, Antwerp, Sydney and Zurich. He also continues to perform, notably in Japan.
