A specialist of German Romantic music Horst Stein followed the path of Wolfgang Sawallisch, while at the same time favouring a more northern repertoire (Sibelius, Shostakovitch). He was particularly renowned for his wonderful soirées at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, conducting the Meistersingers, and a highly remarked production of Parsifal, staged by Rolf Liebermann. He is also remembered for a memorable performance of Messiaen’s Turangalîlâ-Symphony. In 1985, he leftthe OSR to take up a similar position in Germany.
