A graduate in literature and art history from the École normale supérieure in Paris, Mariame Clément completed a doctorate on Persian medieval miniatures while working as a trainee at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. She made her directorial debut in 2004 with Il signor Bruschino/Gianni Schicchi at the Opéra de Lausanne, with sets and costumes by Julia Hansen. Since then, the pair have staged a series of productions, from the Opéra de Paris to Covent Garden, via Dresden, Bern and Athens, from new works such as Philippe Hurel's Les Pigeons d'argile (Toulouse, 2014) to rediscoveries such as Offenbach's Barkouf (Opéra National du Rhin, 2018), which won the prize for best rediscovery at the 2019 Opera Awards. In 2020, her production of Don Quixote for the Bregenz Festival won the prize for best production of the year at the Österreichischer Musiktheaterpreis. She recently staged Maria Stuarda at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the second part of a trilogy beginning with Anna Bolena in 2021.
