Genève-Plage
Geneva
Almost a century devoted to promoting public baths.
Geneva's passion for public bathing is not a recent phenomenon. As early as the Middle Ages, bathing establishments were built in the city, along with various public bathing places in Lake Geneva, the Rhône and the Arve, allowing everyone to cool off or, more prosaically, to wash... Clothing evolved, from the simplest outfit to the most elaborate ‘costume’ to the swimming costume, only to return today to a more material-efficient version.
The history of Genève-Plage is inextricably linked to the development of the harbour and the Eaux-Vives quay in the early 20th century. The ‘Bains de soleil et du lac’, founded in 1916 on the Eaux-Vives shoreline, were at the origin of ‘Genève-Plage’, created in 1932 a little further towards Cologny at a place called ‘Port-Noir’...
Since 2019, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande has been holding a music festival here in August.
