Born in Basel, Silvia Tobler began her cello studies at the Allgemeine Musikschule in Muttenz with Michael Overhage. After graduating, she entered Thomas Demenga's class at the Basel Conservatory where she obtained her teaching diploma.
She continued her studies with Prof. Heidi Litschauer at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and with Arto Noras at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where she obtained the soloist and chamber music diplomas with excellent distinction.
During her studies, Silvia Tobler took part in the chamber music classes of Brenton Langbein and Gerard Wyss in Basel and Paavo Pohjola in Helsinki. She attended several masterclasses with Rocco Filippini, Marcio Carneiro, Johannes Goritzki, Vladimir Orloff and David Geringas.
She gained her first experience with professional orchestras as a substitute in the Basel Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Basel Symphony Orchestra.
In 1992 she joined the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.
