“I would like the G string and I want it to sing!” was the response of violinist Robert Soëtens to Prokofiev when the latter asked how he wanted “his” concerto. Begun in Paris, finished in Moscow, the Violin Concerto No. 2 has become one of the most popular of the repertoire due to its classicism and enchanting melodies. Like all of Prokofiev's music, rhythm also permeates Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. In 1814, Beethoven, not yet completely deaf, heard it performed by a huge ensemble, comparable to a modern orchestra, and much to his pleasure.
